Another aspect of KPIs is the data frequency involved The individuals being managed by these KPIs should know the length of time they have to influence the direction and outcome of their personal MBOs Time periods typically are defined directly in the dashboard as quarterly, daily, or yearly information Finally, we have some enhanced items that we see in the dashboards that I would like to point out Sometimes, as I have mentioned, we get too caught up with all of the bells and whistles and the final result of the dashboard is something like a what-if scenario rather than an indicator or dashboard display We need to make sure that we clearly separate the ability to create a set of KPIs from doing what-if analysis on the indicators versus a display of a KPI It s all great to be able to shift percentages and values around to see what might be an outcome but to spend too much time over-analyzing the possible outcomes is not the best use of a business analyst s time Rather than having them analyzing the actual information, we find some dashboards offering too many options to make comparisons that are meaningless in the scheme of things Work the KPIs around doable measures and benchmarks and we will not have all of the what-if analysis going on The what-if will be relegated to forecasting and planning rather than comparison of what was actually posted versus some random changes in levels You also need to be very aware of what types of information you deliver to the different groups Most people immediately want to see the day-to-day information to do analyses That is fine if they are doing operational KPIs, but strategic KPIs require more static, longerterm information Business users who are responsible for driving the long-term growth of the company need monthly, quarterly, and yearly numbers, not daily information You want to offer them a larger window to the data so that they can analyze trends and patterns without the distraction of new information arriving every 24 hours There are many more aspects of KPIs that we could delve into and analyze, but these are some of the issues that I ve run into during my projects and workshops to gather KPI information.

tical white matter, internal capsule, brainstem, or spinal cord Usually, when hemiplegia is severe and permanent as a consequence of disease, much more than the long, direct corticospinal pathway is involved In the cerebral white matter (corona radiata) and internal capsule, the corticospinal bers are intermingled with corticostriate, corticothalamic, corticorubral, corticopontine, cortico-olivary, and corticoreticular bers It is noteworthy that thalamocortical bers, which are a vital link in an ascending ber system from the basal ganglia and cerebellum, also pass through the internal capsule and cerebral white matter Thus lesions in these parts simultaneously affect both corticospinal and extrapyramidal systems Attribution of a capsular hemiplegia solely to a lesion of the corticospinal or pyramidal pathway is therefore not entirely correct The term upper motor neuron paralysis, which recognizes the involvement of several descending ber systems that in uence and modify the lower motor neuron, is more appropriate In primates, lesions limited to area 4 of Brodmann, the motor cortex, cause mainly hypotonia and weakness of the distal limb muscles Lesions of the premotor cortex (area 6) result in weakness, spasticity, and increased stretch re exes (Fulton) Lesions of the supplementary motor cortex lead to involuntary grasping Resection of cortical areas 4 and 6 and subcortical white matter causes complete and permanent paralysis and spasticity (Laplane et al) These clinical effects have not been as clearly de ned in humans as in monkeys The one place where corticospinal bers are entirely isolated is the pyramidal tract in the medulla In humans there are a few documented cases of a lesion more or less con ned to this location The result of such lesions has been an initial accid hemiplegia (with sparing of the face), from which there is considerable recovery Similarly in monkeys as shown by Tower in 1940 and subsequently by Lawrence and Kuypers and by Gilman and Marco interruption of both pyramidal tracts results in a hypotonic paralysis; ultimately, these animals regain a wide range of movements, though slowness of all movements and loss of individual nger movements remain as permanent de cits Also, the cerebral peduncle has been sectioned in patients in an effort to abolish involuntary movements (Bucy et al); in some of these patients, a slight degree of weakness or only a Babinski sign was produced but no spasticity developed These observations and those in monkeys indicate that a pure pyramidal tract lesion does not result in spasticity and that control over a wide range of voluntary movements depends at least in part on nonpyramidal motor pathways Animal experiments suggest that the corticoreticulospinal pathways are particularly important in this respect, since their bers are arranged somatotopically and are able to in uence stretch re exes Further studies of human disease are necessary to settle problems related to volitional movement and spasticity The motor organization of the cat and even of the monkey is so different from that of humans, and the range of volitional activity and motor skills is so much less in animals, that direct comparisons are not justi ed The distribution of the paralysis due to upper motor neuron lesions varies with the locale of the lesion, but certain features are characteristic of all of them A group of muscles is always involved, never individual muscles, and if any movement is possible, the proper relationships between agonists, antagonists, synergists, and xators are preserved On careful inspection, the paralysis never involves all the muscles on one side of the body, even in the severest forms of hemiplegia Movements that are invariably bilateral such as those of the eyes, jaw, pharynx, upper face, larynx, neck, thorax, diaphragm, and abdomen are affected little or not.
